Fisheries Department launched a project to eradicate water hyacinth from the Backwaters of Kerala which were divided into four zones. We were selected as the agency to work on this massive project wherein many weed harvesters and pontoon excavators were deployed acrosss Alleppey, Changanacherry, Chertala, Vaikom, Vembanad etc to clean the waterways so that farmers can easily carry their produce for sale to the distribution centers. Removal of the hyacinth would also lead to manifold increase in fish production boosting up the economy and providing local employment. We had to work in close coordination with the village Panchayats as the waterways were often in congested areas and the collected weeds had to be dumped temporarily on farm land before it was carried by Fisheries Depaertment to their recycling centres
